- Полное имя - Уильям Оливер Стоун (William Oliver Stone).
- В 1967 году Стоун был призван в армию и отправился во Вьетнам. Во Вьетнаме Стоун воевал более года — с сентября 1967 по ноябрь 1968, участвовал в крупном сражении за базу огневой поддержки «Burt» и был дважды ранен.
- Окончив колледж в Пенсильвании, Стоун вернулся в Нью-Йорк и поступил в Йельский университет, но, проучившись там менее года, забросил учёбу и отправился в Южный Вьетнам преподавать английский.
