- В годы Второй мировой войны Ли Марвин оставил школу и поступил в 4-ю дивизию морской пехоты США, где служил снайпером. В 1944 году был ранен в битве за Сайпан, за восемь месяцев до сражения за Иводзиму. Большинство солдат его взвода погибли. Эта битва навсегда оставила след в его жизни. Ли Марвин получил «Пурпурное сердце» и был комиссован по состоянию здоровья в чине рядового первого класса.
