Hong lives simply with his wife and his daughters Ngek and Gim. Japanese invade Thailand and the village is bombed and Hong's house goes up in flames even after she has prayed to the "Goddess of Mercy" to prevent that from happening. Ngek almost loses her faith in religion and the "Goddess of Mercy"
