In the distant past, the Netherlands was often at war with other nations - overseas as well. Thus it happened that in 1634 a number of Caribbean islands were conquered from Spain. Since that time, Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
