Kowloon Walled City was a unique, notoriously dense, and largely ungoverned Chinese enclave in Hong Kong, known as the "City of Darkness," that grew from an ancient fort into a chaotic, self-sufficient metropolis of thousands, famous for its lawlessness but also vibrant life.
